Medicare and private healthcare plans in Adelaide and South Australia
Medicare in Australia is similar in principal to the NHS in the UK, providing free or supplemented healthcare. Residents of the UK are covered by Medicare on arrival in Australia thanks to a reciprocal agreement even on a temporary visa. You can see more info on Medicare, what it covers and how it works in the links below.
Medicare is easily obtained by visiting one of the offices listed on the medicare site and completing the form they will provide. You will be given a temporary Medicare card to use until your plastic one arrives in the post. All members of the family are covered under the one number although you can request to have additional cards. A Medicare card can also be used for ID purposes.
Did you know that in South Australia Medicare does not cover an ambulance call out? Get Ambulance Cover to protect your family from high call out bills in an emergency.
There are a number of private health care providers which provide you with enhanced health care including many 'extras' not covered by Medicare such as optical and dental care. We have listed some of the larger providers below along with a comparison site to check costs and inclusions. Check in the small print for inclusions and do not assume they will all include ambulance cover.
